It’s Wednesday and I’m SO excited to share with you another Wellness Warrior speaking on an incredibly important struggle for so many women! I was happy to finally connect with Kate because I can relate so much to her health journey and she’s also from Pittsburgh 🙂 . I also find her approach to holistic living and being a mom so inspiring!
Meet Kate Markovitz and hear what she has to say about dealing with body changes throughout your lifetime.
How to Accept Body Changes: Wellness Warrior, Kate Markovitz
I ASKED KATE: How do you deal with body changes throughout your life and work to accept it? Especially with things that trigger change like chronic illness, disease or even, of course, pregnancy and becoming a mom.
SHE ANSWERED: In life, you are guaranteed change and challenges… but also happiness if you choose to accept it! Our bodies are dynamic and adaptable, meaning that they will mold and form to what we need in our life at specific times with what it is given. It is sad how many women waste so much time fighting their bodies through diets, restriction, exercise, etc. Body changes are good, dare I say, necessary!
How to deal with these changes? Compassion, gratitude, and unconditional love.
Compassion allows you to take a step “outside” your body and recognize the demands we place on ourselves, plus those of our environment. It teaches you to acknowledge everything your body does for you every single day in every single moment, from breathing to temperature regulation to growing a baby! You can look at disease or illness from a perspective that your body is fighting a battle and needs your support and love.
Gratitude allows you to honor and appreciate your body. You can learn to be grateful for your changes and challenges. For example, if you have some extra weight postpartum, you can be grateful your body was healthy enough to grow your baby. If you’ve lost your cycle, be grateful your body gave you a signal that you are out of balance.
Unconditional love allows you to embrace your body at every stage of life… lighter, heavier, pregnant, postpartum, muscular, softer… whatever the situation may be! I always encourage women to think of someone they love unconditionally. Despite challenges or disappointments, deep down you love that person no matter the situation or how you may feel in a single moment. In your eyes, that person is always worthy of your love. This is also how you should think about yourself and your body. You are worthy!
Don’t be mistaken… you are allowed to love and deeply appreciate your body and still want to improve or change it, but come at it with compassion, gratitude, and unconditional love. Remember that your body is always on your side. Your challenge (i.e. extra weight) is an adaptation your body is using to keep you alive and functioning. When you are the same side as your body through life’s changes, you will be able to achieve true happiness along the way.
