It’s been awhile since I’ve made one of these posts, but I want to keep sharing words of wisdom from wellness warriors this year with my Women Crushing Wellness series. This week, I want to introduce you to Lindsey Smith, The Food Mood Girl, a Pittsburgh health and wellenss coach, speaker and author helping people live a vibrant life through self-love and healthy choices.
I discovered Lindsey several years ago when I was looking to repair my relationship with food and my body. I was immediately attracted to Lindsey’s approach to healthy living because of the awareness she brings to what people eat and how it relates to moods and cravings. I especially love Lindsey’s vulnerability sharing her childhood struggles with anxiety in her TedX Talk. Meet Lindsey and hear what she has to say about food guilt.
How to Overcome Food Guilt: Wellness Warrior, Lindsey Smith
I ASKED LINDSEY: How do you Overcome Food Guilt?
SHE ANSWERED: I think overcoming food guilt starts with evaluating how often you let guilt guide your food choices. I did a study and found that 85% of women and 65% of men suffer from food guilt on a daily basis. Think about it – that is a lot of time-spent feeling guilty about food choices. Everything from in the kitchen at home, during lunch at work, holiday parties with friends, and outings with neighbors. Checking in to see where and when you are feeling guilty can help you become more aware.
From there, I think it’s about honoring your body and shifting your thinking of food as “good and bad” to simply food as nourishment. Sometimes your body wants vegetables and sometimes you want a brownie. Rather than feeling guilty about eating a brownie, instead embrace it and feel damn good about eating you. You will most likely fulfill your craving and you won’t feel the need to overcompensate later on because you ate it and felt good about it.
So, I want to know from you. Do you feel like you experience food-guilt? How do you overcome it?
